Susan Rafte and her sister founded the Pink Ribbon Project in Houston in 1995. The project is the first dance initiative founded solely for the purpose of increasing breast cancer awareness and raising money to help fight the disease. DanceCare, an emergency breast cancer fund for dancers, grew out of the Pink Ribbon Project’s New York City office.
Susan says cancer had a strong impact on her life because she was diagnosed at age thirty- three, around the time her first child was born. She now considers her experience with the disease part of her identity.
